this is a link to a longer comment I made concerning Lincoln's treatment of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Lincoln also permitted states which remained in the Union to keep their slaves, while freeing the ones in the South. His mindset was more than anything else a phrase he repeated often: The Union must be preserved.
