Quote from the chapter I'm on:
Two men who came with the 1844 group were responsible for establishing settlements to the north. One of these was George W. Bush, a mulatto, who was well liked by those that knew him. Bush discovered when he got to Oregon, the settlers has just passed a law which forbade Negroes entering that region. Bush and several other families settled north of the Columbia, near fort Vancouver.
This was published in '47. Interesting stuff.
