Technically speaking. Most of our current understanding of the Bible is limited by how we understand and have translated the works.
If someone misunderstood and assigned a wrong definition/translation to a word. It could in theory change the meaning of an entire passage and we would be none the wiser.
The authors were also writing to convey meaning to people in the Classical Era . One could reasonably assume they’d be writing to be understood by the people of the day. Not modern people. And would have worded and phrased concepts accordingly.
For all we know. Firmament really meant the Observable Universe at large and wasn’t exclusively limited to Earth.
There’s also the idea that we were made in the image of God. Some people believe that really meant our souls. With the appearance of physical shells merely being happenstance. Which of course opens the door to other souls in different Physical shells.
In recent years. Fueled in part by the rise of the “Ancient Astronaut” theory. Some believe the Old Testament of the Bible is an account of an Alien takeover of earth couched in appropriate mysticism by people who were collaborators with the aliens to fool the uneducated masses and place themselves on top as a priestly class.
There’s also the arguments about the Apocryphal Books. Should they or should they not be included. Why weren’t they included etc.
Most ideas concerning the Bible that differed from widely accepted mainstream Christian thought up until fairly recently historically speaking were viciously and often violently opposed and suppressed.
Now it’s still viciously opposed. But the opposition now has moved on from the whole “Purge and burn the heretics”. To either “Ignore the crazy people and maybe they’ll go away.” Or they get into an argument or insult and belittle each other.
I believe in God and Jesus. Thats all I can say with certainty. The rest I’m willing to be open on. There’s enough anomalies in various written and oral histories as well as physical archeological evidence all over the world to suggest we sure as hell aren’t being told something. What that something is? I couldn’t rightfully say with any certainty.
