Agree. The American Civil War as taught now is a travesty. Compare today to the Confederacy in the 1860{s. History is written by the victor & history, as taught by classrooms today, is far from correct. Textbooks prior to the Civil Rights Act will paint a more reasonable picture for secession. The South was unfairly taxed. The North spent most of that taxation on railroads & Northern interests & cities. The Southern states seceded because they did not benefit from the money spent on Northern interests.
Secession is in the Constitution. The South broke away & wanted to be left alone. They never invaded the North prior to the North invading the South. Slavery was not the main cause as is taught today. Read soldiers memoirs and diaries & you will find that very few, & I mean few, we’re fighting over slavery; on both sides. In 1860’s America, almost everyone was racist, North & South. It was a different time. Hardly anyone would have given up their life/prosperity to fight over slavery in the 1860’s. That is a myth.
The Southern army’s had the best generals and the superior moral character in comparison to their Northern counterparts. They we’re fighting to defend their homes & their states. The Southern armies literally kicked the shit out of the Northern armies until they couldn’t replace their manpower and supplies.
Southerners fought because their states were being invaded by an oppressive North. Most of the world at that time accepted slavery. After England, we were, give or take, the 2nd to abolish it. The main cause of the war was unfair taxation. Not slavery. Most of the rest of the world still accepted it. I am not defending slavery. Just put yourself in that time period & look at things through the eyes of men back then.
Ft Sumter was a taxation collection depot. That is totally ignored today. Not a single Southern ship imported slaves to the US. US flagged ships did that. Furthermore, Lincoln was a hideous racist. He did believe the races could comingle. In his writings he stated that blacks & whites could not live along side each other. He did not allow them to vote. Northern states were the last to abolish slavery. Lincoln wanted to send blacks back to Africa or the Caribbean. He offered $100 to blacks that agreed to leave. Not covered in school today. Worst of all, & this can be compared to today, Lincoln was the originator of combining “business & state” interests. He put corporate interests before National interests. He ignored & punished the South through unfair taxation. After Lincoln and Johnson, Grant was elected. The word lobbyist comes from his administration. People would be waiting in the lobby to try to influence Grant who was one of the most corrupt Presidents of all time.
Do not be brainwashed by what you learned in school. Republicans stole elections for a decade after the Civil War because Southern Vets could not vote. The same is flip flopped today. These Democrats would take your vote away in a heartbeat if they could.
If you don’t believe me, ask an old person what they were taught in school about the Civil War. If they haven’t been completely brainwashed by modern historical lies, they would agree with me.
