Indeed it takes special processing that will have to be automated and inside vacuum chambers. Each cell is a hardened container, like a AA size, to keep air out, so the container has to be opened / crushed open and the contents extracted then chemically neutralized. All in a vacuum or neutral gas. Such a processing factory will have to be a toxic waste site certainly not in a city.

I don't know of any engineering studies concerned with how to build this.

My personal desire is to see whether we can make nutritious chow for leftists from a mix of lithium recycling and crickets.
