The thing so many liberals fail to realize is that people can do absolutely anything if they really want too. Some people do choose to do some really terrible things. Sometimes they end up in power. That's why we keep monarchy at arms length in modern times.

Also, I don't know about this, but I do know that some Celtic kings were expected to bed a Celtic goddess before their own wife. So the practice was existent at least in some part of their society. I'm not too sure how exactly they simulated bedding a Celtic goddess for the ritual though.
