eh. this discussion has been going on for a while now. 'they' is a very convenient replacement for 'he or she'. I don't think there's any turning back... 'they' is now plural or nonspecific... after all, that is the reason it is used for the plural, because you can't specify a gender for a mixed group. the rule against such use is seeming pretty archaic. i don't know what the official stance is atm, but who cares; official stances are currently retarded...
i would also argue that the singular 'they' if often used in the hypothetical, and refers to the multitudes of possibilities that exist... using 'they' when you know the persons identity is usually weird and wrong, of course.
