Words and a talking to are simply the warning sign. If one doesn't heed the warning sign than one does not get another warning sign. What happens in the real world is that one carelessly runs into oncoming traffic. If one were to be lucky enough to survive that screw up than consequences of that screw up have to follow. Part of parenting and yes part of being a good parent (IMO) is loving and part of loving is dealing out punishment even when it also hurts oneself to do so. One doesn't get to "parent" the easy way. Parents don't get to play with kids, take them on vacation, ball games and teach them to learn but then delegate the punishment to "life" or for the world to teach ones kids the lessons that should have been taught by the parent. Parents don't get to simply reap the rewards of the good times without also dealing with the agony of punishing our kids when it needs to be done.

With every spanking a parent gives it not only teaches the lesson but also indirectly teaches the kid that life is sometimes not fun but the job has to be done regardless of one's wants. Spanking is a purely selfless act. It ONLY benefits the child. The parent gets no future rewards for such an action. In fact the parent has to live with that decision in agony for ever.
