A conversation needs to happen. Children are far more smarter than they are given credit and can handle a lot more information than is suspected, that is a big part of the problem. They are sponges, absorbing just about everything that is going on around them and people assume they are too stupid to realize. They are humans. Introduce them to Christ and try to be better around them or at least explain the negativity to them so that they can have a better chance in their own lives without dumping on people going through their struggles.
I can only reconcile innocent with they do not know better because otherwise they can be little monsters but that is generally a reflection of their environment, so still "innocent" but is that the right word?
"more smarter" Ha!
