As you look up, you can see light, the shapes and colors shifting on the surface, but it is still unclear, distorted.

When you finally hit the surface and break through, all of a sudden all of the light and the patterns and the images and shapes you saw from below, they all burst into concrete, tangible, solid reality. No longer looking at a flat, distant surface, the world has become a 3-D wonderland, with new fresh air for you to breathe in and refill your lungs.

Faith is the power that draws us to the surface. You see the patterns, the light, the shifting shapes from below, and you continue to swim and rise upward, believing that when you eventually reach the surface, you will find an entirely new world awaiting you.
