Mark Passio's take on the matter involves the Annunakis who got interested in the possibilities of some animal species on earth to create a class of slaves who would be able to work for them to find and extract the gold they needed for the atmosphere on their home planet. That would be around 250 000-200 000 years ago. They used genetic engineering to firstly create hybrids using some parts of their own DNA fused with the earthy creatures'. This ended badly because the engineered raced was too intelligent and too strong to control. This would be the basis of many clues of the ancient culture that seemed to be spread around the world, with cosmic knowledge, advanced engineering and design skills (pyramids, too) That is why the «mother race» created an extinction event so they could start off fresh and not be challenged by their creation. After that, they tried again with more caution as to create a far better manageable subpar version of a slave race that could be intelligent enough to use technology but dumb enough to be controlled, using a tiny % of their DNA mixed with mostly grand primates's genome material [The "Missing link"!] , this, according to this hypothesis, is why we can't use most of our brain capacity, because we are being locked off of our (alien) potential . But, in my perspective, this might also be why a tiny percentage of us actually can use a bit more to gain knowledge from insights, visions, telepathy, remote viewing, etc... since this would come from the mix of animal instinct (put mostly aside to do the work) and higher brain functions coming from alien DNA artifacts, triggering abilities, if not only temporarily).. This is why the cabal pushes encoded disclosure in many Sci-FI, as they compare themselves to the original Annunaki race (if not of direct lineage) and promote the idea of "Destroying everything and starting over, in a better way", as paying hommage to their masters/parents/designated rulers, or else.. As they are now trying to now use nano-tech fused with DNA (again) to create another race of an even more manageable sub-human to help in creating the next "narrative" of our role on earth..
