The Polish Catholic Church has been trying to do this for Centuries.. It is why Ukraine pledged allegiance to Tsar Alexis around 1654 or so. At the time the Tsar was hesitant because Russia had troubles of her own and knew that taking Ukraine under their wing would mean war with Poland.
