I agree with your opinion completely, and would expand beyond pedophiles to other forms of extreme crimes. Certainly in cases where permanent physical harm took place. Just looking now online about rape and spousal rape, I was shocked to see that it was not until the 1990's that spousal rape was considered a crime in many countries, and many it still isn't. I'd heard that rape was almost laughed at in France in the past, but can't find info regarding if thats true or not, its 3:25 AM here.
