You can refuse injections in the hospital, like the hepatitis B vaccine and say you want to “defer” it until the first pediatric visit with your chosen pediatrician. The hospital might have you sign a waiver. Find a pediatrician who is like minded. They are hard to find. Or maybe a pediatrician who at least is flexible with giving vaccines later and on a more limited basis. Do you ever ask why the children who received 7-8 vaccines in the 1970’s aren’t compelled to take all the vaccines given today, if they are so vital? Or why do those over 65 receive a double strength flu shot? Having been a postpartum/newborn nurse for 43 years I agree with the other comment by rebelmom: do NOT let your infant go to the nursery. Rooming in is the only way to insure the care being given to your baby. Demand the pediatrician examine the baby in your room, defer all shots, breastfeed on hunger cues, do skin to skin immediately after birth and as long as your baby is stable (this normalizes the blood sugar, maintains baby’s temperature, and prevents needless interventions such as checking blood sugars with a heel stick. If despite skin to skin the blood sugar is still low, hand express colostrum and administer a few drops via a needle less syringe into the side pocket of your baby’s mouth, if he or she will not nurse. Try to put your baby to breast immediately post birth. In the first hour babies are the most awake, if the birth is natural. Epidural and spinal anesthesia can interfere with suck, as well as maternal medications during labor and delivery.
