Your body produces an immune response when infected with a virus which protects you during future exposure. Some oral polio vaccines use a weakened live virus, therefore I cannot understand why you would think that wouldn't produce a similar immune response as exposure to the un-weakened virus.
How safe it actually is is up for debate I suppose, but I'm not sure how one could believe in the body's immune system and not believe expose to a weakened live virus in a vaccine wouldn't work in a similar way as exposure to the full strength virus.
