It's not about how far into insanity they go, it's about how quickly.

Beliefs just as "crazy" have been adopted by entire populations more times than can be counted. The development of these beliefs was gradual however, with generations adopting little bits and pieces until the entire societal ideology was completely changed from what preceded it. (Unless there was a hostile takeover. That speeds up the ideological adoption substantially by making certain beliefs illegal and others mandatory on punishment of death; see the first 30 years of the USSR.)

The "crazy liberal" beliefs we see today were started in the 1960s. From there they went super slowly. Once you look, it is easy to trace the gradual changes, heading towards a one world communism (with all the Baphomet stuff added in). However, in the past 10 years, and especially in the past 5 there has been a huge increase in momentum. Without time to adapt to small changes, and having huge changes forced on us (with insufficient fear or "penalty of death" to encourage adoption), too many people see what is happening. That causes it to fail.

In other words, it's not recognized as "insane" because it's actually insane (all ideologies are insane). It's "insane" because it has happened so fast that everyone can see the end result. That end result is too far from the beliefs of the present, thus the "insanity" is recognized.

Bottom line: it's "insane" because it is intended to be seen as insane.
