News reports about changing eye colour didn't come out until 2003 on the Drudge Report. What happened to Matt Drudge?

If it's as simple as "she got contact lenses", then why all the image and footage scrubbing? And why no articles drawing attention to the eye colour change prior to 2003? Seems weird to me, in a newspaper society that frequently described in lavish detail her outfits.

Come to think of it, were the bright pant-suits there to draw attention away from the eyes in the same way that the Sgt. Pepper suits stopped people from analyzing the Paul McCartney replacement?
