Sometimes the right answer is just the simplest. That group is a theater troupe. They're not serious legislators or leaders. They don't set their own agendas or actually represent their own constituents. They merely mime that they have their own agenda and mime that they represent their constituents.

In regards to Julian Assange, there is no agenda that justifies keeping a political prisoner that committed no crimes locked up like he's Hannibal fucking Lector.

Either they are pandering to their audience to show empty support for Assange knowing he wont be released. OR they know he will be released and want to create the appearance that the regime supported his release all along.
