They thought they had such good control of the narrative that people would cheer for them or at least stay silent for fear of being labeled domestic terrorists and extremists after Jan 6th, or if they wouldn't they could be deplatformed and harassed by a big scary government cracking down on terrorism, misinformation and hate speech. The drive to create legislation post-9/11 giving the government absolute power to persecute terrorism makes a lot more sense when you see how ready they were to apply the label to political opponents.
