Various dictionary definitions of democracy

a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves

a system of government in which people choose their rulers by voting for them in elections

a country in which the people choose their government by voting for it

a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections

And the US is also, nominally at least, a Republic.

A country can be both. But I never use the phrase "democratic republic" because it's become a synonym for hardcore totalitarian govt.

E.g., Democratic People's Republic of Korea (N. Korea), the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), the Somali Democratic Republic, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam ( N. Vietnam), the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
