I think there's a religious aspect to it - to get to that level of visiting the island you are already initiated member that has progressed to high levels within the "cult". you've already sworn an oath of secrecy. you've already been made aware of the penalties of breaking this "the bonds of the occult are strong". you've been reprogrammed to accept good and evil must both exist and must both be embraced etc. they do not share the same morality system as us. potentially, depending on your beliefs they are influenced by demonic spirits.
