It amazed me the 'not-so-much' History Channel tried this with Hannibal too. It didn't go over well with the public. Here's an ancient marble bust of Hannibal. Here's Hannibal's image on a shekel coin.
Perhaps the 'Black' Hannibal as portrayed by the History Channel got started from Hannibal's many disguises he wore to evade assassination. At the battle of Lake Trasimene:
"Hannibal quartered his troops for the winter with the Gauls, whose support for him had abated. Fearing the possibility of an assassination attempt by his Gallic allies, Hannibal had a number of wigs made, dyed to suit the appearance of persons differing widely in age, and kept constantly changing them, so that any would-be assassins wouldn't recognize him."
I thought the following was interesting: Hannibal's full name was Hannibal Barca. Hannibal means "joy of Baal." Barca means "lightning." Barca is also spelled Barcas, Barca, and Barak.
Perhaps this provides us insight to the selected first name of Barack Obama.
