Is it logical to assume that 2017 is the same as current year?

As an aside, I frequently encounter commenters who believe the Cold War Soviet Union == modern day Russia. They believe that Russia is still a Commie controlled USSR. Ironically, the same people typically are unaware that the US is now far more like the old USSR than Russia.

These same people also typically believe that 9/11 SA == current year SA.
