The "age of sail" already did that, but because it required intimate knowledge of the wind and how to use it, steam and then fuel burning engines made sailing easier and FASTER!! ...and therefore cheaper. A clipper ship could cross the Atlantic in about 21 days; whereas a steamer or engine ship could cross in about 15 days; but the modern ship like the Queen Mary could cross the Atlantic in 7 days.

Going back to sail (or kites) would be a technological step backwards. Idiots.
