A government of non-idiots would have said, "hey, it makes a lot of sense to ensure a domestic supply chain for these critical medicines and precursor chemicals and supplies so we don't end up getting shorted during times of emergencies or poisoned by Chinese "quality" control.

And you know what's even better than a 700 million barrel strategic petroleum reserve? 5 million barrels a day of extra production that we could have brought on line a few years ago from all the already drilled, but not yet completed oil shale wells. There is no reason we should be seeing price shocks from anything other than natural disasters.
