at the risk of date fagging or making predictions, I would expect the precipice would be something like, as the election draws nearer, Trump is either convicted or placed under some kind of restriction, that is then used to block him from running. I do expect that will happen, and the the tensions at that point will be all-time high. I can't see things being worse than that as hope and promise fades. I think we must be very close to 'landing'
