Interesting thing about Ukraine. It used to be called Scythia.
Well, really Scythia was much larger than that area, but that specific area of Scythia was something of a "border state" for the Larger Scythian Empire (which contained most of Asia and Eastern Europe). Because of it's closeness to the Slavs (the origin of the word slave) where the Scythians would harvest strong white people (proto-vikings) for slavery, and because the port cities of the Black Sea are there, this particular area of the Scythian Empire was the Scythian human trafficking center.
This continued to be a Slave Trading center for the Scythian Empire for thousands of years. Eventually the Scythians came to be known as the Tartarians. The Empire of Tartary/Scythia was erased from history by the USSR (see the two "Alphabet Revolution" sections in Russia and her Colonies, by Walter Kolarz, 1952).
Another name for that area that might be more recognizable is "Khazaria." The Khazarians were the Scythians (a subgroup). I think it's this same group of Scythians that created the USSR. I think they wiped themselves out of history.
Regardless, it's the same people doing the same thing in the same way in the same place that they've been doing it for a minimum of 3000 years (though likely much longer than that).
