morally decent

This is a relative term. I suggest "proper morals" have only to do with respecting others individuals rights (not desires, but rights), not on the personal choices you make for your own way of living yours.

So... I don't really agree with this. There was just as much infringement of other's rights in the past as there is today. In fact most of them haven't changed a whit.

Constitutionally aware

The Constitution IS the Illusion. It is the greatest illusion there is. That you would suggest "Constitutional awareness" (in the positive sense) as being a "better" thing proves the problem from my perspective. People need to learn that the Construction is a fraud. THAT is the necessary Constitutional awareness. There are probably more people who understand that now than before (though still far too few), but I suggest that's a step in the right direction.

our borders were not being overrun with criminals

Meh, there was plenty of criminal activity happening between countries, most run by the C_A or the mafia (which are just different doors to the same organization). It's just more "in your face" now.

free, prosperous, and largely moral and sane America was a lot less of an illusion than it is now

On the contrary, the illusion was more complete then. Now, it is in your face because it is crumbling. Back then, it was hidden. People believed they were "free." They weren't. They weren't even close. What they had were a thousand paths they could choose, every single one of those paths created and controlled by the same entity. A thousand contrived paths gives the illusion of freedom.

If you put a rat in a big enough cage and teach it to believe the walls are just a conspiracy theory, it believes it is free, and it will fight and kill for its slavemasters to protect that freedom.
