There are many forms of democracy. A republic is one form of democracy. Saying a republic isn’t a democracy is like saying a Chevy isn’t a truck because it is a Chevy.

More precisely, our republic is formed through a democratic process. They are overlapping concepts. You could have a republic formed by random lottery, for example. But the terms republic and democracy are not mutually exclusive.
