The Donbass region broke away from Ukraine in 2014 when that population along with the Crimean population were NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE in the 2014 presidential election, fearing that another pro-Russia President would be elected. In Donbass that is NO longer part of Ukraine, they formed the DPR and the LPR which by 2021 pleaded with the Russian Federation to intercede against the Kiev nazi regime genocide. As such, President Putin disgusted with all the murders and killings of 23,000 Russian-Ukrainians by the end of 2021, chose to launch his Special Military Operation to protect the Republics of the Donbass region.
