When Carthage and Rome engaged in the second Punic wars. A Punic general called Hannibal invaded the Italian peninsula. While moving his army he lost an eye from a bug bite. It got infected and he had to have it removed. A string of so many victories followed this man that he became a icon/symbol of Carthage. Now Carthage was a empire with a plutocracy ruling system ( a government ruled by the rich) it was founded by colonists composed of a mixture of Lebanese and Jews. Their main religion was Ba'al worship. These ppl practiced child sacrifice, sexual rites etc etc. The Romans accused them of these practices but, historians dubbed this as propaganda till new discoveries of mass graves of children were found and it was later revealed that the Romans were indeed right. Though Carthage was later completely wiped out, the Ba'al religion and the ideal of rule through money survived. It later became a secret cult that embedded itself in the religion of Judaism through a series of books written in the 400s a.d. These books are now known as the Talmud. The rites of joining are as follows. You have to have a certain amount of money and then go through a series of rituals, one involving receiving a black eye and the sacrifice of a child.
