The bastion fort questions pique my interest. Mainly, what was their true function? How did they build them to such geometric perfection? And, how did they construct the ones on water like Fort Jefferson off the coast of Key West? There are a lot of ideas about what they were used for - massive power sources, etc. I think one of the most fascinating things I've read is that quarries, golf course and cemeteries have been built on top of these structures to remove their existence... but why?
Edit: I have to mention the imprint of the enormous star fort that has been all but scrubbed from Fort Union in New Mexico. It is claimed this was built for the Civil War, but the fortress ruins for that are to the east of the bastion fort. It is absolutely huge and can been seen on Google Earth.
