This is called a "borrowed ladder". In order for this to occur, the person who is being "borrowed" needs to have an accident, heart-attack, OD, or other health issue that can be obfuscated enough to make it appear that it was a "near death experience", but the person survived. When the person does not survive, their identity is ripe for grabbing.
