A lot of stock are sold short, their are millions of borrowed shares that were sold and not yet purchased.
GME was heading into the MOASS 3 years ago when they turned off the buy button on Robbinhood and several other brokers,killing the momentum. Once these stocks rise a bunch the shorts are forced to buy them back, driving the the price more and more.
