Someone I know had trigeminal neuralgia. It wasn't diagnosed until after two root canals unfortunately. A brain surgeon at NY Presbyterian said he could fix her issue and he did. I believe the fix was to put a teflon pad between two nerves that were close together. I think the thinking is that the signal on the nerve carrying the touch sensation jumped onto the nerve carrying the pain signal. So when you'd get slight touch sensation on your cheek let's say, you'd feel terrible pain. And yes, I believe she has a small piece of something behind her ear that was used to close the hole they used to do the surgery.
