I had a sister that was schizophrenic and we treated her in the 70's with orthomolecular psychiatry...centered around mega doses of B3...she successfully lived with no further flipping out until her death in 1992 from breast cancer. William J. Walsh, PhD continued the work of Abram Hoffer on holistic ways to treat brain disorders. He wrote a book Nutrient Power...Heal Your Biochemistry and Heal Your Brain. He has a clinic in Illinois but he has trained doctors throughout the country on his protocols. It is quite interesting and very successful...
My son is bi-polar...he is stuck in the manic cycle most of the time...I made an essential oil blend of 1/3 Cedarwood, 1/3 Frankincense (Boswellia Carterii), and 1/3 Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) per Dr. Scott A. Johnson from his book Evidence Based Essential Oil Therapy. He takes a drop under his tongue in the am and the pm and it helps with the attention span and many of the symptoms of the mania. You must use quality oils to be taken internally and you can take more than two times a day if necessary. I recommend those from Pacific Insitute of Aromatherapy (Dr. Schnaubelt) using Original Swiss Aromatics or Florihana oils from France found at Healthy Traditions. The point is to get a good quality essential oil for internal usage.
There are homeopathics available for brain dysfunction as well as Bach Flower remedies for emotional states but a certain amount of knowledge is needed to utilize the right remedies, so a naturopath or homeopath would be helpful here.
Dr. Amen has clinics throughout the US and he utilizes brain scans to correct brain dysfunction. He has many good videos and books which have a lot of great information. His clinics are costly, but he has done a ton of work on correcting brain dysfunction. There are so many different alternative therapies available that are good choices when you want to get off the drugs and try something else. Be sure to come off any drugs slowly...do your research...psychotropic drugs are very tricky and it must be done slowly...do your research...the info is out there.
I wish you luck...I will say all disease starts in the colon so improving your gut biome is essential. Then check out Vitamin D status...should be around 70 ng/mL...and need to add vitamin K. There are just so many good herbs and vitamins that have to do with brain health...primary is a good high dose B complex...it makes for very interesting reading to research this important aspect of health...hope all your research yields an answer for your nephew. Believe me I can sympathize with this...
