The States coat of arms with the word Tuebor (I will defend) is being held by an elk and a moose. The coat of arms itself has a settler on the shores of the Lake with a sunrise. It has the USA eagle with E Pluribus Unum (from many, one) and the States motto, Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam, Circumspice (If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you). The blue field that surrounds it symbolizes the Great Lakes.
I think it incorporates how Michiganders see themselves and think of our State very well.
Heres an interesting little tidbit -- Michigan has its own Pledge of Allegiance to the State flag.
