You are not going to win the war against baby killers by going 150 mph on this issue.

We're not going to win it by braking to a stop on the Interstate and putting it in reverse, either, which is what people are doing.

The issue is that it's completely cynical for people to suddenly start singing a different tune about abortion just because the 2024 election is coming up.

Here are the reasons why backpeddling on this issue will most likely come back to kick us in the balls.

1. It makes us look like blatant hypocrites. There are already campaign ads for various liberals around the country where they have video of their conservative rivals prior to the SC judgment on Roe vs Wade going scorched earth, proudly stating that they won't rest until all abortion in the US is illegal, and now that those same people are worried about votes, they're backpeddling and talking about how it's all about states' rights and "common sense solutions".

2. Does anyone actually believe that anyone is going to think these conservative candidates have really had a change of heart and have changed their beliefs and opinions surrounding abortion? Someone would have to be pretty stupid to believe that all of this backpeddling is due to anything more than pandering to people to get votes.

3. Who in their right mind would think that those new viewpoints on abortion will last any longer than it takes them to certify votes for the election? The people who are being pandered to with this aren't stupid. I, personally, would be insulted if someone expected me to believe that all of these changes of heart on abortion is anything other than complete BS, just scraping for a vote

4. What happens when one of the blue states cashes in on all this "states' rights" talk and make some horribly evil abortion law? What will we be expected to do when that happens? Just say, "Hey, it's all about states' rights, so they can do what they want!"? Because we're going to look like utter assholes from here on out when we raise hell about what other states are doing. As soon as we bartered away the upper hand of our moral stance on the subject in the hopes we might get some votes thrown our way, we lost. It's going to make it all the more difficult to get people to come around to our side because we've lost the upper hand in the argument.

5. Does anyone really think this is going to sway a significant number of voters? How many people do you know that are wishy washy on the subject of abortion? By the time someone reaches the age to vote, they've developed some very strong opinions on the subject. And since young people don't make up a large percentage of voters in the US, most voters are pretty much set in their ways on the subject. Pro-abortion people aren't going to suddenly believe that the conservatives who are backpeddling on it are people they want to vote for. They don't trust them.

Basically, to sum it up, the voters who are being targeted with this aren't stupid. They're not going to suddenly vote for conservatives because they've gone all wishy-washy about abortion rights.

And then you have the added bonus of pissing off the ultraconservative voters who don't like seeing people suddenly becoming more liberal on abortion rights.

I just don't see how people can believe that enough people are going to be swayed by all this to flip to Republicans.
