Yes, I was saved in the same way with Vit. D. Me and my family all had our vitamin D tested and we were all in the mid 20's...even the outdoor people, because it is possible not to assimilate the vitamin D adequately from the sun in certain people. I read the books:
The Power of Vitamin D by Sarfraz Zaidi, MD
The Miraculous Results of Vitamin D3 by Jeff T. Bowles
So I started everyone on NOW 10,000 IU's of D and we have all increased our D levels to the mid 60's. We also take Vitamin K, which is necessary to transport our calcium into our bones. I take Super K from Life Extension because Vitamin D supplementation should always be combined with Vitamin K.
What I noticed was my arthritis symptoms were so much improved. I was also allergic to the sun (it is a real thing) and now I can tolerate the sun if I slowly acclimate to it and I am enjoying a great tan...we are all enjoying much better health since we have increased our Vitamin D. It is important to be tested...it absolutely has to be greater than 50 ng/ml for optimal health and should ideally be about 70 ng/ml.
I also take Magnesium...mainly for heart and leg cramps. A heads up about magnesium is that there are many different forms and they all have different healing powers...sharing a great article on magnesium...I do use other things effectively for depression such as herbs, Bach Flower Remedies, SAD light therapy and homeopathics...there is a lot to choose from.

Happy reading in whatever you decide to pursue...there is something alternative for every condition under the sun...glad you stumbled on the truth of that...
