If you use a modern dictionary to define Republic, you find this: a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law.

Isn't this what we have? Eligible voters elect representatives who govern according to the law? Well somewhat ignoring the last part about govern according to law as I believe most of our elected representatives are crooks.
