PSA: Make sure your wood chipper is ready and running at peak performance. Follow these tips to make sure yours is ready for work:

  1. Be sure that you have fresh fuel ready. Fuel stabilizer should be added to keep the bs ethanol from separating.

  2. Be sure to have a trickle charger/battery maintainer on the battery and check the electrolyte levels in the cells. Remember, top them up with distilled water only.

  3. Fresh motor oil is important. Be sure to run the engine for about 10 min to heat it up, as this will help drain the sump more completely than if done cold. Most engines are fine running 5w-30, but follow the mfg's recommendations. If equipped with a filter, be sure to lube the seal with oil using your finger. Hand tight only! Don't overfill the oil.

  4. Sharp blades save time, energy and wear and tear on the machine. Be sure to keep a keen edge on the blades using a hand file. You'll get better results with a file than using a Dremel or 4.5" grinder.

  5. Inspect and repair/replace debris kickback safety curtains/flaps. You want the "chips" to go out the discharge chute and not back towards the operator.

  6. Check the spark plug and analyze the burn soot. Make sure your spark plug is properly gapped for proper ignition. The color of the soot on the plug electrode should be a light brown. White indicates a lean condition, while black indicates a rich condition. Adjust the carburetor as required to correct the air/fuel mix to stoichiometric settings. Be sure that the choke is adjusted properly, as this can cause a rich condition.

  7. Inspect, clean and replace all filters (air, fuel). Clogged filters can cause a reduction in power and rich/lean conditions.

Following these simple steps can help you extract MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT and efficiency from your chipper.
