Been sober since Jun, 2006. so 18 years now. What is interesting over the years, is that I can see the deterioration of drinkers around me - somehow they can see that my partner and I "look good for my age" too, LOL. In the first year, one gets one's life back, but there are other advantages, like an ability to read again, and study.

Since then, I have returned to academia to get a Master's (after dropping out in final year of a Bachelor of Science - I was already taking Master's courses, because I was ahead. The dropping out happened decades ago, because, well, frat parties etc. did not really mix with high achievement - I burned out).
Alcohol is a bane, IMO. Even on 'special occasions'. And guess what? It is possible to celebrate without 'incohol'. Kids in one's circle actually prefer it.
