At what point is it a valid participant in mass media to require mass attention, conversation, and analysis? As opposed to the other side of the spectrum, simply being too humiliating to even make it to public awareness. Which would have been the case even 10-15 years ago.
The meta kicker is, the behavior itself that's being shared and memed is analogous to the way sexual humiliation was once again vomited all over the public through viral social media marketing. Sexual humiliation is a form of dehumanizing, and of course that all started when hardcore porn chic hit mainstream culture in the early 70s. But even then there was some separation between smut media and other media. Not anymore.
Of course, having said that, most of us are also probably hypocrites for condemning this current "thang", because if we were old enough we laughed our asses off at Star Wars boy in 2003.
