The idea that Internet sleuths have some superpower that lets them gain advantage over people who I don't know have access to the body, access to the gun, investigative powers and tons and tons of other advantages is something I stopped doing after the giant screw up after the Boston Marathon bombing.

My guess is they were able to track the gun back to his father and that's how they identified him quickly.
