ZIKA VIRUS AND MICROCEPHALY - OUTBREAK IN BRAZIL 2015

In 2015 there was an outbreak of the Zika virus transmitted by mosquitos that resulted in pregnant infected mothers giving birth to babies with a severe abnormality of small skulls - Microcephaly. Microcephaly is associated with mild to severe lifelong developmental delays and disability.

Microcephaly can affect a baby in different ways, including:

• delayed development or speech
• intellectual disability
• problems with coordination or balance
• seizures
• agitation or aggression

You have probably been as horrified and saddened as me to see the shocking abnormality that affects newborn babies whose mothers have been infected with the Zika virus. The skulls and brains of the babies have not grown properly, and the babies appear to have small heads, a lifelong condition known as “microcephaly”. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.

• intellectual disability
• problems with coordination or balance
• seizures
• agitation or aggression
• problems with hearing or vision. Microcephaly is a rare condition associated with mild to severe developmental delays and disability. Babies can be born with microcephaly or it can develop in their first few years. Microcephaly is a lifelong condition. There is no known cure or standard treatment for microcephaly. There are early childhood intervention services and support available to help.
