The more we learn about nuero science, the more all the developmental theory that exists will become obsolete, autism is probably the reason for many success's in all fields, mistakenly diagnosed as developmental disability, and in many cases, mental illness. If you read the biographies and auto biographies of famous people, you can pick it up how nuero divergent they are. High functioning autism should not be compared to those whose functioning is limited, and in those cases, there is evidence of organic brain problems, seizures, birth defects, etc, the spectrum needs to be narrowed. For some reason I was told that Aspergers is no llonger politically correct, but it is different than the very impaired non verbal, truly disabled person. I entertain the thought that high functioning autism is a sign of evolution in some whose brains can see and hear and focus above and beyond the need for sleep walking through life.What has been labelled as anti social or eccentric in many cases, is just a mind that pays no attention to bullshit but sees keenly the point of the matter. And before clinicians start pointing to the issue of emotional regulation, they should look at all the people who cannot function without some sort of addictive substance, nicotine, alcohol, anti depressants, shopping, sex, etc. Take away those things from the gen. pop. and you will see some real emotional disregulation!
