We are using wrong terminology.
In a hurry, I said shell casings. But only shotgun shells have shell casings, since the entire thing is the shell.
But cartridge isn't right either. The brass thing the bullet is stuck into is a case or casing. The bullet and the casing together are the cartridge. So they probably didn't find cartridges on the roof, unless the guy spilled his ammo.
