Yes I understand the author's statement that the silverware was used to buy the vegetables. His point of saying "very expensive vegetables" is not to encourage the stocking up of metals for the farmers set their own prices on food and took the metals for them. They had food first and now they have food and metals. He speaks later of how people who dont even know how to survive immediately wonder when the new economy of gold and silver will be established after a massive disaster and how discouraging it is to hear that. He's teaching how to provide for themselves to survive and they were stuck in their consumer mind set.

If in a survival scenario, you have food, ammo, and water you will have little need for anything else as you can trade your food for the metals and set your own price. Some people can't grow their own food or stock up, those should have gold and silver and ammo to protect it but keep in mind, unless anyone is willing to trade food for metal close to home and keep it secret and not rip you off or price gouge, you are painting a target on your back unless you have a group of people you trust. The same guy shows up every week with gold and silver to buy vegetables...someone will become interested in how much gold and silver you left at home.

Also how far can you walk, where will the nearest msrket be set up? Are you looking to see if anyone watches you leave your house, or trails you as you walk loaded down with gold and silver? etc. these are all unknowns that can be solved by stocking your own food ammo water medical supplies etc. Now.
