From what I can tell from history, the French have always been tyrants at heart. Even their revolution was a revolving door for the guillotine. They became the monster they fought as soon as the aristocrats lost their heads literally.

They killed basically all them, then had to kill the people who killed the aristocratic class, then went (in French) "well fuck... what now? oh I know! That midget general we have! He'd be great as emperor!" Hell, they even used freedom from slavery as a tool for war in the South American/Carribean colonies, and pretended to give blacks freedom while making their economic systems enslaved to the franc and then to the euro.

The French have always been weird hypocrites who can't seem to get to grips with what freedom means and requires. Honestly, "Liberté et égalité" do not a good souffle make, even with fraternité sauce.
