We live in a big world and big government is the norm. I'd love to live in a world where things are done locally again, but we're not there yet. Not even close.

That ship has probably sailed. You could probably succeed in decentralizing to an extent. But you’re unlikely to succeed in reverting back to some mythic bygone day of local everything. At least without a couple generations of constant effort.

Employ young men, the free market isn't doing it right now

At the moment. The market incentive is to automate where at all possible. Which would cut into entry level Jobs often held by Young Men.

Trump tossed down the Mars by 2029 Gauntlet during his Carolina speech. Pulling a Renaissance Spain and opening a new frontier to aimless Young has some potential in absorbing the world’s dissatisfied and disaffected Young. The first waves of Spanish Colonists and Conquistadors. Were largely 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sons with no real inheritance. Bankrupt Merchants trying to escape creditors, And washed up and or disgraced Nobility seeking to reinvent themselves. All seeking to build a new life

Possibility of owning your own land, adventure, and the possibility of wealth and prestige from mineral resources. Would be a major draw particularly for aimless young men who feel like they’re lacking a purpose here. And there’d be work for people who don’t necessarily have the “Appropriate Education” to work here on Earth in an environment increasingly prioritizing skilled work over general labor.

As it could be decades before any prospective Martian colony would develop to the point of deploying the sort of automated systems that are forcing said people out of the Job here on earth.

In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s part of the plan. To address part of our problems. News from the Frontier would certainly generate many positive headlines. And frankly feeling like we had a future as a species would probably spur a population boom.
